Charlie Gere

One of a series of talk to accompany the exhibition : "What happens if...?"

Charlie Gere considers the role of the hand in experimentation, arguing that it is the hand that is the most experimental organ, engaged as it is with touch, grasp and feel, beyond what can be seen.

Through the empirical tradition in British science, the arts and crafts’ emphasis on ‘handicraft’, techno-human evolution, and Juhani Pallasmaa’s theory of the ‘thinking hand’, Charlie explores the experimental nature of this sensory organ.

Dr Gere is Head of the Department of Media, Film and Cultural Studies at Lancaster University.
