Essentials: Expression

Storey Gallery is working in partnership with The Dukes in Lancaster to present a series of artists' films in the cinema.

The Essentials series, put together by the Independent Film Office, have so far include Essentials: Dreams, Essentials: Pop and Essentials: Protest. Essentials: Expression is the 4th in a series of 6.

This fascinating selection offers a series of intimate and deeply personal statements from a host of avant-garde film-makers about gender, sexuality, confession, feminism, lesbianism and the self. Amidst the many terms used to define artists' film and video, 'personal film' was amongst the earliest, marking the practice as entirely different from the industrial production of feature films. Including works by Martha Rosler, Sadie Benning, Stuart Marshall and Lis Rhodes.
